Abstract

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the utilization pattern of contraception and factors that influence it among women in the reproductive age group in Ajman, UAE.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from April, 2022. A total of 209 participants were recruited from university, hospital, shopping malls and residential areas in Ajman. An interviewer-administered validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Participants were women in the reproductive age group (18-44 years) of any nationality. Collected data was transferred to SPSS version 28 for analysis. Results: Out of 209 women interviewed, only 48.3% utilized contraception to limit family size. Participants who considered partner's wishes as very important (80.8%) and those negatively influenced by cultural background refrained from using contraceptives (72.5%). Individuals with an education above undergraduate level (31.3%) used contraception, whereas participants with husband’s education above undergraduate level (26.3%) showed limited usage of contraception.

Conclusions: To conclude the prevalence of utilization of contraception was 53.1%. Nationality of the participants, husband's education and number of previous live births determined the use of contraceptives. Healthcare professionals played a pivotal role in spreading awareness about contraception. Along with complications in the previous pregnancy, influence from both partner and family and belief that contraception influences hormones lead to discontinuation of contraceptives.
