Title: Awareness of rural mothers regarding danger signs in children under five years of age

Abstract

A community-based intervention study was conducted on rural mothers who have under five children. Objective was to assess  the impact of an educational intervention among rural mothers regarding danger signs in children under five years of age and the health seeking behavior of mothers during illness of their children. Composite multistage sampling technique was adopted to get 480 samples (240 in each arm—study and control). Intervention was given thrice at three months interval by using IMNCI videos and charts with the help of a laptop and projector. Collected data were entered in MS Excel, coded and analyzed using SPSS 20. At baseline there was no significant difference between groups in terms of socio-economic, socio-demographic profile and knowledge on danger signs along with health seeking behavior.

For the study arm, there was a significant association found at baseline between knowledge score and few demographic variables. Mean knowledge score had improved from 5.11 to 11.26  among study arm mothers after 3rd educational intervention and its significantly higher(Mann Whitney U-.000, P <.000). After 3rd intervention parents’ decision to get medical assistance improved from baseline 35 % to 71.55 % for study arm and for control arm 40.42 % to 55.32%. To avoid preventable mortality among under five children, mothers’ awareness regarding danger signs in children and subsequent health seeking behavior is necessary which could be improved and sustained by repeated awareness generation programs.
