Ayurvedic management of childhood Vitiligo- A case series
Abstract
Vitiligo, a chronic disease characterized by depigmentation of skin, commonly presents itself in childhood. The disease is presumed to be mediated by an autoimmune destruction of melanocytes. It presents with symmetrical, well-demarcated macules of complete pigment loss and commonly affects the face, genitalia and areas over bony prominences of hands, wrists, feet, knees and neck and those around body orifices. Even though it is non-fatal the psychological impact of the disease due to disfigurement can be severe. The conventional treatment modalities available for vitiligo are of limited use in children and their long term outcome is not encouraging. Ayurveda, a holistic system of medicine, contains explanation of causes, pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment of the disease Shwitra, which correlates with vitiligo. In this case series, we present two cases of vitiligo in children who were managed with a similar Ayurvedic intervention comprising of a course of Virechana, internal medications in the form of Bakuchi Ghana Vati, Amruta Bhallataka Lehya, Mahamanjishtadi Kashaya, Tab Pigmento and external application of Lukoskin ointment followed by exposure to sunlight. In both the cases complete remission of lesions were observed and the VETI score of lesions returned to zero after the treatment. Thus, classical Ayurveda intervention was effective in achieving complete remission of lesions of childhood vitiligo in the two cases referred to in this case series.
