Diabetes - friendly Herbal Candy that prevents Dental caries
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a rapidly growing global health concern and is associated with several systemic and oral complications. According to the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas (2025), approximately 589 million adults worldwide are living with diabetes, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades. India alone accounts for nearly 90–101 million people with diabetes, making it one of the countries with the highest diabetic burden globally.
Individuals with diabetes are more prone to dental caries and oral infections due to elevated salivary glucose levels, reduced salivary flow, and altered oral microflora. The high glucose environment in the oral cavity promotes the growth of cariogenic bacteria, thereby increasing the risk of tooth decay. Hence, there is a growing need for preventive strategies that are both diabetic-friendly and beneficial for oral health.
This study proposes a diabetic-friendly herbal candy formulated using natural herbs such as Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Triphala, Yashtimadhu etc combined with xylitol, a sugar substitute with a significantly lower glycemic index than conventional sucrose. Xylitol is known for its anticariogenic properties, including inhibition of cariogenic bacteria and reduction of plaque formation.
Laboratory investigations were carried out to evaluate the effect of the herbal xylitol candy on oral pH and microbial growth. The results demonstrated that the formulation helps maintain a neutral oral pH and inhibits the proliferation of cariogenic microorganisms, thereby creating an unfavorable environment for dental caries development.
Considering the rising burden of diabetes and its associated oral complications, this herbal xylitol candy presents a novel, natural, and preventive approach for maintaining oral health in diabetic individuals. This innovation addresses a large and growing population at risk while providing a safe, functional confectionery alternative that promotes both systemic and oral well-being.
